The winners of this year’s Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) international competition are announced today, World Environment Day (Tuesday, June 5), by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).
Selected by representatives from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP); United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO); European Environment Agency (EEA); International Institute for Industrial and Environmental Economics (IIEEE); The Times newspaper; and the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), a total of seven articles, four photographs and six videos were awarded to nominees from 19 countries.
Sarah Pickering, International YRE Coordinator, said: “Youth-led environmental journalism grows stronger and stronger and here is some of the best of the best. So many young people are passionate about improving the environment they inherited and are becoming change agents. They are highlighting local and global issues that matter and, wherever possible, potential solutions. Their work inspires and gives hope. It is a privilege to host a platform through which they can share, grow and influence. Congratulations to all the nominees and especially this year's winners.”
The Young Reporters for the Environment international competition is open to 11 to 21 year-olds who report on an environmental problem in their community via print, photography or video. Nationally, Young Reporters can participate individually or as a group. Internationally, collaboration between Young Reporters from different countries is encouraged, in particular through the YRE website and social media page and channel. Articles, photographs and videos which win at the national level may be submitted to the international competition.
Judges at the international level select a winning article (up to 1,000 words), photograph or photographic essay (up to 12 photographs) and video (up to 3 minutes) in each of three age categories (11-14; 15-18; and 19-21) unless there is exceptional competition, in which case they may also award a 2nd and/or 3rd place.
