Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) is an international network of secondary school teachers and students who discover and promote solutions to today’s environmental issues through investigative journalism. YRE has more than 500 groups in 20 countries.
At the national level, YRE groups choose local environmental issues to investigate, with the goal of communicating relevant information and solutions to the general public. The students carry out real journalistic enquiries and report their findings via the media (local press, radio, television, conference, exhibitions).
YRE projects must meet the following 3 objectives:
At the international level, participants of the YRE programme share information and interact with one another online through YRE's website and network. YRE groups are supported by FEE’s National YRE Coordinator in their respective country. The International YRE Coordinator and international website also support participants by providing educational resources, tools, and services.
Each year students submit articles and photographs to their National YRE Competition. Winning articles and photographs from the national competitions may then be entered into the International YRE competition. Winners from the international competition are showcased in an annual YRE book, an international collection of news which celebrates the diversity of the YRE projects and aims to inspire future participants of the programme.
