(11.5.2009)

FEE announces a global programme, with support from HSBC of US$2.5 million over three years, to teach more than 100,000 five to 18 year olds about protecting the environment through FEE's Eco-Schools International Programme

The HSBC Eco-Schools Climate Initiative will involve HSBC employees, initially in 11 countries in the 2009 - 2010 academic year, who will volunteer their time to help schools address a variety of climate change themes.

Students will join an eco-committee to assess their school's environmental performance. Working with the rest of the school and the wider community, students will decide which environmental themes they want to address and how to measure and monitor progress.

The programme will culminate each year with the HSBC Eco-Code Climate Competition sharing best practice and celebrating the achievements with other schools around the world.

Countries included initially are Brazil, China, Ireland, Japan, Jordan, Malta, Russia, Slovakia, South Africa, United Kingdom and the United States.
