The Portuguese Eco-Schools awarding ceremony was held on 29 September 2009 in Santa Maria da Feira, North of Portugal

This event was attended by 5000 students, teachers, municipalities representatives and other institutions.

In the morning students could visit the exhibition and take part in several activities, such as solar races (boats and cars). In the afternoon the Eco-schools flag was handed out to 874 schools recognising the environmental work done during the school year.

The 2008-2009 Eco-Schools flag will be displayed in schools in 200 cities of Portugal. These awards are a result of the continuous and strict work in the Education for the Sustainable Development according to the Eco-Schools seven steps methodology.

This year ceremony is also important to underline the first Eco-schools flag award to a University – Escola Superior de Educação de Coimbra.
